I was elected as a member for Central Ward in May, 2007. Over the years I have acquired a range of interests relevant to my role as a councillor. I have worked in the voluntary, private and public sectors and have been a volunteer with the Samaritans and Victim Support. In the mid 1980s I was a road sweeper and feel strongly that basic services like this are what the public demand of a good local authority. I aim to represent all ward residents and hope that I fulfil the role of local councillor to the satisfaction of all who call upon my assistance.
I am county councillor for Boston East and sit on the county council's Children and Young People Scrutiny Committee; the Citizens' Advice Bureau; I am Fydell House litter champion for Tower Street; and area Placecheck member for South High Street and Witham Central. I am chairman of the Boston town area committee and a member governor of the Boston Grammar Schools Federation.
I believe passionately in local politics and its capacity to make real positive change for local people. I also believe that value for money is essential and that the public who pay for services via council tax do not feel cheated.
A healthy democracy begins with a healthy local democracy.
Councillor Gilbert also represents the Council on the Stronger Communities Delivery Group, Lincolnshire Transport Partnership and Supporting People Commissioning Body.
