Street cleaner kicked after man demanded 'clean my bench'

Witnesses or information are sought after an incident in which a street cleaner was kicked after being "ordered" to "clean my bench".

The 70-year-old, who retired from Boston Borough Council after a lifetime career but occasionally helps out on a casual basis, had already cleaned the area along the Crown House footpath near B&M on Monday morning (July 23).

He returned from a scheduled break to be met by a tall man who ordered him to "clean my bench".

He informed him that cleaning of the area had already been done and would be done again later in the day, but not immediately.

The man repeatedly insisted that he "clean my bench" now, approached him from behind as he walked away and kicked him in the leg, leaving him shocked and bruised.

The assault has been reported to police and anyone with information should contact the council's community safety team on 01205 314 200 or the police on 101.

Cllr Paul Skinner, the council's portfolio holder for community safety, said: "This is an appalling incident, an unprovoked attack on a council worker diligently going about his business. The police are investigating and we will be providing them all co-operation to support their enquiries and ensure that the person responsible for this assault feels the full weight of the law."
