About the Single Person Discount Review

Each year local authorities nationwide receive a high volume of applications for Single Person Discount. Sadly some of these applications are not genuine and just like benefit cheats these people are falsely claiming reductions in their bills. We are committed to reviewing reductions to ensure the correct entitlement is awarded. Legislation exists which allows Council Tax cheats to be prosecuted in the same way that benefit cheats are; through the court system and made to pay back the money they owe.

Checks will be made to ensure everyone who claims the discount is genuine. However, occasionally circumstances may not be so easy to explain. To help in these situations we have included the most frequently asked questions (PDF) [187KB] (opens new window) that can arise throughout this review period.

Why has my Single Person Discount been removed?

Following a review of our accounts, a number of Single Person Discounts have been removed from residents in the district.

If you believe your discount has been removed in error and you are still a sole occupant at the address, then please visit our reapplication page for more information.
